Tooth decay can start as early as with baby teeth. As soon as the teeth appear, it is time to start brushing them. A child’s teeth should be brushed twice a day – once in the morning, once at night.
Practicing flossing on baby teeth is a good way to help your child get into the habit of flossing. Baby teeth are easier to floss; by the time they have permanent teeth, they will already be used to flossing and will be up for the challenge.
Help your child brush and floss their teeth until they are at least 6 years old, and let them watch you do yours, as studies show that a child’s brushing habits are usually influenced by their parents’ habits. Here are some tips to keep in mind while showing your child how to brush their teeth.
- For children under age 2, use a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- For children 3-6, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- Using a soft bristled brush for children, clean teeth for two minutes twice a day and after consuming sweets.
- Show them how to hold their toothbrush at a 45-degree angle (toward the gum line). Stroke all surfaces of the teeth gently.
